If you have not already done so, please look at your Community Service Year End Report Form and see if there are any projects listed on it that you have not participated in.  Now is the time to plan doing those items that you have not yet done.

Have you promoted a National Service event?  Did you participate in “Make A Difference Day”, Points of Light, or Citizen Corps?  Have you helped any veterans with the Veterans History Project?  Did you publicize your Community Service events?

I am still getting reports that list only phone calls and cards sent to people.  This is not really Community Service.  Please remember that Community Service MUST involve the community in some way.  It does not matter if you do the service for the community or you get the community involved in the service.

Think about sponsoring a youth activity, such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, baseball or soccer team.  These are great Community Service activities.  Check with you libraries and see if they need any assistance.  With budget cuts in most communities, Community Service volunteers are in great demand.  Think about tutoring students or volunteering at a local school.  How about assisting churches?  There are countless ways you can assist your community.

Check with your County Commissioners.  They have lots of areas where they can use volunteers.  It can be on an individual basis or done by the Post/Auxiliary.  If you have not already done so, think about “Adopt-A-Highway.”  They only ask that you clean your 2 miles of highway twice a year.  (You can do it more often if you choose.)  Let’s keep North Carolina green and beautiful.

Plan on having a safety course at your Post and invite the community.  With the holiday season on us, it will be a great time to get together and instruct the community on safety for the holidays.  No one wants to have home accidents this time of the year.  Contact an insurance agent to come to your Post and present a short program on safety.

Once again, please send your reports to Richard Zavesky, 4900 Pinewood Dr., Hope Mills, NC  28348.  If you send a copy to me, be sure to mark it COPY so that I won’t send it on to Richard and we won’t be double reporting.

Remember that we are United in Love for our Veterans and Country and that Our Strength Lies in Unity.”  With these two keys words we can have a great year in CommUNITY Service!

Have a safe and happy Holiday Season and keep reporting.
