VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AND PATRIOT’S PEN

JANUARY, 2011

The Voice of Democracy and the Patriot’s Pen programs have been completed on all levels, including the Department judging.

The Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen top three winners will be announced at the Banquet February 4, 2011, in Raleigh at the Council of Administration meeting.

Auxiliary Chairmen, since this program is complete, you may send your year end report to me now instead of waiting until April 15, 2011.  Please send copies of letters, publicity, and etc. to support your program.

The Voice of Democracy/Patriot’s Pen year end report form can be found in the back of the Department Yearbook which each Auxiliary President has.  If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I wish to take this opportunity to thank the chairmen on each level, for the fine job you did on the Voice of Democracy/Patriot’ Pen Programs.  Our programs continue to be a success   because of your continued dedication. I hope the New Year will be great for you, and the Department of North Carolina.

WELCOME TO 2011!  Yes, it is a new year and I hope all of you had a Merry Christmas and,

I wish for each of you a Happy New Year.

It is hard to believe our Auxiliary year is half over.   Let’s all remember our men and women on foreign soil, protecting our freedoms, and remember the families they have left behind. Assist families that need help, you will find that assisting families of troops that have been deployed will be rewarding.

As you know, members that have not paid their membership dues for the 2010-2011 year are not in good standing.  Please do not lose those members; they are an asset to your Auxiliary.

Why not get a telephone committee together, and call each member that has not paid.  You may find they have not paid their dues because of a hardship due to sickness or job loss.  Your Auxiliary may want to help these members by paying their dues, and you know these can be paid from your RELIEF FUND.

Every member should be involved and made to feel a part of the Membership Program.

Some MEMBERSHIP BUILDERS ARE:

            Activities in Community Service

            Americanism and Youth Programs

Dances, dinners and other social functions

            Interesting meetings

An active VFW that supports the Ladies Auxiliary VFW

“OUR STRENGTH LIES IN UNITY”, be positive, strengthen your Auxiliary with TEAMWORK.

Working together, showing enthusiasm and excitement about the work of your Auxiliary as

a team, many goals can be reached.

We are “UNITED BY LOVE FOR OUR VETERANS AND COUNTRY”.  As dedicated Sisters let us strive to RECRUIT, REINSTATE, and RETAIN members, because it takes members to keep our organization strong.

 Loyally With Love,

 Farres

Here we are, at the start of a new year.  Time sure flies.  Who knows just what the new year will bring to each of us.  I hope that everyone finds good health and happiness this year.  You can bring some happiness into another person’s life by just doing some good.

Check with your local churches to see if there are any families in need in your community.  Think about adopting one for the year.  Do something special for the family each month.  Make this the year that you get involved in your community.  If you have spare time, use it to help others.  Volunteer at a local charity, church, hospital, or library.

With all the cuts to the North Carolina state budget, this would be a great time to find ways that you can help cut costs in North Carolina.  Think about volunteering some time at a local school or afterschool program.  Check with your local police or fire department and see if there is something you can do to assist them.  It may be as simple as answering the phones or doing some routine filing.  I know that some of you out there live in rural areas, have you thought about being a volunteer fireman?

You can never volunteer too much.  Not only can you volunteer your time, you can donate items and money.  Pick a charity that you really believe in and support it.  This could be as simple as attending the meetings and taking minutes or assisting with mailing out material.  Can’t think of a good charity to assist?  Easy, just get on the computer Google “charities” and you’ll find a long list of things to do.

If you have school aged children, see about assisting at their school.  Offer to become a Brownie or Cub Scout leader.  Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are always on the lookout for good leaders.  Boys & Girls Clubs are also looking for volunteers.  How about volunteering at your local Goodwill Store?  The possibilities are endless.  You only have to do a little looking to find the right job for you.  What might work for Nancy, may not be the perfect job for Sarah.  Look around until you find that perfect opportunity.

As always, remember that a good Community Service Project takes time and planning.  If you are planning on doing something special for Easter, it’s not too early to start planning.  You should also be starting to think about what your plans are for the summer.  Good planning is important.  Be sure to make note of your Community Service Projects in the minutes of your Auxiliary or Post meeting.  Then be sure to send your report to Richard Zavesky at 4900 Pinewood Dr., Hope Mills, NC  28348.

Have a safe and happy January and I’ll see you again in February.

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AND PATRIOT’S PEN

DECEMBER, 2010

By now, the District Commander or District Chairman should be sending their winners to the Department Chairman for the Department judging.  December 11, 2010 is the date set for our Department judging.

Reminders:  Have you thanked your VFW counterpart, teachers, parents, principals, judges, news media and all others that helped make your Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen program a success.  Perhaps you would like to plan a dinner at your Post Home to honor your winners, and remember parents and grandparents enjoy attending such events.

Recognize and thank the students that participated in the two essay contest that did not win.  Encourage all eligible students to try again next year; this is a win, win situation.  Now is the time to take care of these important matters.

We are United by Love for our Veterans and Country”, so let us remember it is our obligation to guide our youth in the right direction, by opening the doors for a higher education.

I am very interested in how you assisted your Post in promoting the Voice of Democracy/ Patriot’s Pen program, along with the number of entries. Also, if you publicized this program, and have newspaper articles, bulletins, and etc., I would appreciate a copy along with a report.

Auxiliary Sisters, remembering Our Strength Lies in Unity”, we play a very important role in molding the lives of our young people.

Christmas is rapidly approaching; do you have members that have not paid their 2010-2011 dues?   Every Auxiliary member is important, and we must let them know we care about them.  The Holiday Season is a perfect time to make personal contacts; they will appreciate hearing from someone in the Auxiliary.

RE-INSTATE those members who have slipped out the back door.   Talk with your Auxiliary Treasurer, get those old application cards, contact these ladies and see if they will re-commit themselves to our veterans.

NEW MEMBERS are needed to boost our Auxiliary Programs and younger members can breathe life back into Auxiliaries with their energy and vitality.  Don’t be afraid to ask everyone if they are eligible to join our organization.  Please stress that the Ladies Auxiliary VFW helps supports and protects Veterans and their families.  Make up membership kits, place them in stores, offices and hand them out at community events.

COMMUNICATION is important.  Communicate with your members; it is not a waste of time. Keep your members informed, let them know what is going on, and    how they can help the Auxiliary with projects or programs.  Each year if you only get one more member to help, it is worth it.

At this time of the year, mentoring is most important.   As mentors we can help to retain lost members, by reminding them of meeting times, and offer to pick them up to go with you to your Auxiliary meetings.  By making them feel welcome, they may encourage other eligible Ladies to join the Auxiliary.  Invite members to travel with you to Council meetings, District meetings, and the Department Convention.  These are learning schools for all members.

During this Holiday Season, let us all remember Our Strength Lies in Unity so let us work together to strengthen our great organization, The Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Wishing each of you a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Loyally With Love,

CHAPLAINS CORNER

December 2010

Sisters we have just had a wonderful Thanksgiving with many family and friends gathering together to celebrate the first breaking of bread for America so many years ago, maintaining that tradition from generation to generation.

But now we are looking forward to times of Joyous Celebrations of Christmas and all it hold dear to all of us from the birth of Jesus to joyous holiday giving amongst family and friends. Be mindful that our military men and women who are serving our great country are away from home without family and friends pray for them, send cards, bake cookies dig in and get a box together to send something to say “Thank You”.  Visit the VA Hospital and Nursing Homes, take care of those who have served give them a bible, a card or just a token of appreciation. Don’t forget the families of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom help them through the rough holiday season. Check on our Sisters and Comrades to see if all is well.  Love and giving is the spirit of our hearts and our organization.  I pray daily for us to have a great year without strife and instead one full of love and respect for our sisters.

I have received a few more reports and I just think the ‘lil Irish people may be making off with those reports.    At our next C of A please join us come out on Sunday Morning and sing along with us and listen to Pastor show us the way.  Remember this for this month: It’s NOT about us but about those who have and are serving our country.

Walk with the LORD when your Heart needs company.

Turn to him when you need someone to lean on

HE is the only one you can rely on.

GOD never closes a door without opening a window.

He always gives us something better when he takes something away.

God Bless,

If you have not already done so, please look at your Community Service Year End Report Form and see if there are any projects listed on it that you have not participated in.  Now is the time to plan doing those items that you have not yet done.

Have you promoted a National Service event?  Did you participate in “Make A Difference Day”, Points of Light, or Citizen Corps?  Have you helped any veterans with the Veterans History Project?  Did you publicize your Community Service events?

I am still getting reports that list only phone calls and cards sent to people.  This is not really Community Service.  Please remember that Community Service MUST involve the community in some way.  It does not matter if you do the service for the community or you get the community involved in the service.

Think about sponsoring a youth activity, such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, baseball or soccer team.  These are great Community Service activities.  Check with you libraries and see if they need any assistance.  With budget cuts in most communities, Community Service volunteers are in great demand.  Think about tutoring students or volunteering at a local school.  How about assisting churches?  There are countless ways you can assist your community.

Check with your County Commissioners.  They have lots of areas where they can use volunteers.  It can be on an individual basis or done by the Post/Auxiliary.  If you have not already done so, think about “Adopt-A-Highway.”  They only ask that you clean your 2 miles of highway twice a year.  (You can do it more often if you choose.)  Let’s keep North Carolina green and beautiful.

Plan on having a safety course at your Post and invite the community.  With the holiday season on us, it will be a great time to get together and instruct the community on safety for the holidays.  No one wants to have home accidents this time of the year.  Contact an insurance agent to come to your Post and present a short program on safety.

Once again, please send your reports to Richard Zavesky, 4900 Pinewood Dr., Hope Mills, NC  28348.  If you send a copy to me, be sure to mark it COPY so that I won’t send it on to Richard and we won’t be double reporting.

Remember that we are United in Love for our Veterans and Country and that Our Strength Lies in Unity.”  With these two keys words we can have a great year in CommUNITY Service!

Have a safe and happy Holiday Season and keep reporting.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – OCTOBER 2010

Have you made your final preparations for “Make A Difference Day” which this year falls on October 23, 2010?  If not, it’s still not too late.  Just pick a project and be sure to see that you vote on it and record it in your Auxiliary minutes.  Remember, all Community Service projects must be recorded in the minutes of your Post or Auxiliary.

Community Service is something that benefits a community not a single person.  It does not need to benefit everyone in the community, but must benefit the community in general.  A good example of Community Service is Habitat for Humanity.  Although you are helping only one family, you are helping to improve the neighborhood.

A great way to find volunteer opportunities for Community Service is to check with your County Board of Commissioners.  They will have a list of various areas that are always looking for volunteers.  A tiny bit of effort can bring loads of appreciation from you county.

Now is the time to start making your plans for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Think about those who are in need during the holiday season.  See about volunteering at a shelter or having a group at your own Post for a meal.  A good project takes time and planning.  You cannot plan a project for the holidays in just a few hours.  It takes planning and coordination, especially if you are planning something that involves many people.

It is not too early to make you plans for next year (2011).  As I stated above, a good project takes time.  You should start making plans at least two months in advance, so that you can be sure to get them in your minutes.

With school back in session, you can think about projects that assist schools and children.  Think about a Halloween party.  It can be done at your Post or at the school itself.  Make sure that you follow all school policy when making plans to do anything within a school.

To everyone who sent me thinking of you cards and emails, I thank you.  This has not been an easy time for me, but with a lot of hard work, I will again be the Anna you all know.  My husband has taken my decision to slow down very well.  He has been after me for some time to take things easier.

Sometimes it takes a major event to make that impression lasting.  This is not only in your personal life, but in everything.  We all remember the impact of September 11, 2001.  Let us hope that we never again have to go through a disaster like that again.

I’ve been getting some really good reports and I look forward to getting more in the future.

COMMUNITY SERVICE – SEPTEMBER 2010

How can it already be September, seems like just yesterday it was June. I’ve been getting some very nice reports from some Auxiliaries. I would like to stress that just calling a neighbor is not Community Service. That is being a neighbor. If you actually do something for them, mow the lawn, shovel snow, etc., that is Community Service.

We must remember that UNITY is a big part of CommUNITY. That means working together. Work with other organizations and charities. Find a special project that your Post/Auxiliary can do, record it in your minutes and report it.

I do look forward to seeing all those reports. Remember; send me only a courtesy copy. The original should go to your Post Commander who will send it “up the chain” to the VFW Community Service Chairman.

In the mean time, start looking for that project for “Make A Difference” Day in October. I want a report from every Auxiliary that they did something for that special day.

This month is going to be short as I am recovering from two hospitalizations during a three week period and I’m still getting my strength back.
