January 2011

"UNITED BY LOVE FOR OUR VETERANS AND COUNTRY" is a great theme for us all to follow.  With UNITY we have been able to accomplish a lot already this year.  By the time this promotion goes to print, we will have less than four (4) months until those "End of Year Reports" are due on April 15, 2011.  Now that we are on the downhill part of our reporting year, it is time to review your report forms to see if there are activities that your Auxiliary may still need to participate in.

Please remember the Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project.  It is very important for these Veterans to tell their history.  They may also need help with getting it written or typed up and mailed to the Veterans Voices magazine for possible publication.   Also, a reminder that volunteering can be done at Nursing Homes and Community Hospitals as well as the VA Hospital.  All these hours and activities can be reported on your Hospital/VAVS report.

I hope by now that all Auxiliaries who did not have the VAVS and Hospital Guide (pink book) have been able to get one from National.  VAVS Representatives should refer to this handbook to obtain the procedure for getting hourly pins earned by all your Volunteers at the various VA hospitals.  If you need an order form for these pins, please let me know.  Also, all these hours must be verified by your Chief of Voluntary Services before being sent to National.

All Auxiliaries should be giving some thought as to any of their members that may qualify to be nominated for "Hospital Volunteer of the Year".  You will find the application for this award on page YER-11 in your Department Program Book.  It should be completed and mailed to me by April 30, 2011.

The 65th VAVS national Advisory Committee meeting will be held April 27-29, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency in Cincinnati, OH.  All VAVS committee members are encouraged to attend.  This will be an opportunity to learn of Volunteer Programs, innovations in Voluntary Service and to network with national and local members.  All Chief of Voluntary Services should have these forms and I also have them if anyone would like to have them.

Please keep those reports coming and remember the drawing that I promised to have at the C of A for all Auxiliaries who have submitted a report since my last promotion.   Let's make it a real competition to reach our percentage required by National to qualify for their awards next year.

Thank you for all you do for our Hospitalized Veterans.  HAPPY NEW YEAR and hope to see you all at the C of A.

Until next month.....

Loyally
