December 2010
Ladies, as I sit down to write this month's promotion, I can hardly believe that the Holidays are upon us. This is truly a time when we must be "United by Love for our Veterans and Country". The Holidays can be a lonely time for our Hospitalized Veterans. Some of the Veterans do not have relatives who can visit them or maybe they have no family at all. This is where a VOLUNTEER can fill the void by making regular visits and being a friend.
A new concept at the VA Medical Centers is called "Concierge Service" and a brochure entitled "Exceeding Veteran Expectations" explains this concept in detail. Check with your Voluntary Services to see about this opportunity for volunteering.
National Hospital/VAVS Chairman Sandra Flynn has furnished me with some statistics that became available to her at the NEC meeting of the VAVS in October. We had 125 less regularly scheduled volunteers and 1,945 less occasional hours, but we had 1,460 more regularly scheduled hours. For all organizations, there was an increase in the number of volunteers and hours for the second year in a row. The Ladies Auxiliary is now credited with serving on VAVS committees in 166 VA facilities which is a decrease. At present time, we are fortunate to have Representatives & Deputies assigned to all the VA facilities in NC so ladies keep up the good work and sign up more volunteers.
Hospital reports are coming but I would like to see a lot more. So far I only have 20 out of 124 Auxiliaries reporting. I'm sure all the Auxiliaries are doing work and will do more during the Holidays so let me hear from all of you. I want to have a lot of reports to review when end of year comes. From now until C of A in February, all Auxiliaries that send in a report will be put into a pot for a drawing. I will be giving a prize to one Auxiliary in each membership group. So, send in those reports and remember only things done for any type of hospital care should be on these forms.
Please let me know if I can be of assistance to any of you and "THANK YOU" for all you do for our Hospitalized Veterans. It takes very little effort to put a smile on the face of a Veteran.
I wish all of you a Great Thanksgiving and a wonderful Holiday Season.
Until next month.......
Loyally
