AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010

"A Veteran whether on active duty, retired or a reservist, is someone who, at one point wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'  That is HONOR and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." (Author Unknown) but shared by our National Hospital/VAVS Chairman Sandra Flynn.  Ladies I believe that is our "due" to be "United by Love for our Veterans and Country."  Many of these Veterans that we owe our freedom to are in VA Medical Centers or other facilities where someone else provides their care.

One of the keys to successfully providing for our Hospitalized Veterans is to recruit VOLUNTEERS.  I challenge all VAVS Representatives and Deputies to recruit at least one volunteer by the C of A in October.  Please send me the name & address of any new volunteers so that I can thank them personally for their service.  Also try to get the Youth involved in volunteering. Our Veterans do like to talk to our young people and there is a lot of history to be shared by these Veterans.  When our older Veterans are gone, it would be great to know that the history that they have to tell has been preserved so ask those Youth to take notes.  If any of these Youth are regular volunteers, they may also be eligible to be nominated for the James H Parke Memorial Scholarship.  All VAVS Representatives should mention this to the Chief of Voluntary Services.  Remind them that applications are due by November 1, 2010 and should be sent to John P. Brown, President, James H. Parke Board, 6751 Tanglewood Dr., Boardman, OH 44512-4926. Applications for any Youth volunteer who is nominated for this scholarship should be available at the VAMC where the student volunteers.

A reminder to all Auxiliaries that it is again time to pay your Required Contributions which will include the $20.00 to the Hospital Reserve Fund and your VAVS Hospital contribution. This contribution is based on Auxiliary membership as of 30 June 2010.  You will find the form for this on page F-3 in your Department yearbook.

I know most of you have already started on your Hospital program for this year so get those reports headed my way.  Until next time, keep up the good work and remember "Our Strength Lies in Unity."
