ASHEVILLE VAMC April 2011

CHARLES GEORGE (Asheville) VA MEDICAL CENTER

April 2011

Janice Holm, Representative            828-883-2230 or 828-606-3188 jholm@citcom.net

Now that your year end reports are done, we begin working on the new reporting year. Easter is coming and how nice it would be to remember our hospitalized on one of the most holy of Christian holidays as well as one of great fun with egg hunts. It is also a time of beautiful pastel colors of Easter and vibrant colors of blooming trees and flowers. With little effort you can help to bring smiles and pleasant memories of family and childhood days to the infirm.

So, what can you do at the VA? Well, as many of you know or may not know, the Community Living Center has been under quarantine for more than a month and hopefully, it will be lifted by the time you get this mail. The residents will be dying for some serious uplifting and brightening of spirits.  You can send colored plastic sugar-free candy filled eggs or have you seen the tiny little flowering pots at CVS or Michaels with seeds/soil to grow miniature roses, forget-me-nots, and violets? They’re great! And, they’re under a $1.

You know how much I like cut-outs. Here’s a sample of a card you can reproduce on a copier to make a template of several to a sheet, print it out on cardstock, and cut them out. If you wish, you can glue on a cotton ball for a tail, color it, and mail it to Charles George VAMC, Att: Voluntary Service, 1100 Tunnel Road, Asheville, NC 28805 If you want me to send you a template, call, email or text me. I’ll be glad to send you one.

APRIL 2011

"United By Love for Our Veterans and Country" has proven to be a great guideline for us all to follow this year.  This will be my last Promotion before End of Year reports are due tome by April 15.  Please make sure to use the End of Year report form and get them in on time to be included for the judging for Auxiliary awards.  It is also very important to have at least 80% reporting participation by our Department to receive a National Citation.

All applications for Hospital Volunteer of the Year are due to me on or before April 30.  All VAVS Representatives should review the record of volunteer hours at their respective Medical Centers.  Be sure that your Volunteers are presented with the hourly pins that are due them. These pins can be ordered from National at no cost.

According to the Department Treasurer, some of the Auxiliaries have not yet paid their required contributions to the “Hospital Reserve Fund”   of $20.00 and the “VAVS Hospital Fund” thatis based on your June 30 Membership.  Ladies, please take care of this obligation as soon as possible so that the funds will be available for distribution to our VA Medical Centers.  The form for this was included in a recent Department mailing.

I'm sure most of you have heard by now of the passing of our Auxiliary Sister Sandy Nodurft from Hendersonville Auxiliary 5206.  She was a dedicated Volunteer at the Asheville VAMC for many years and was an Honorary VAVS Representative.  Cards may be sent to
97 Ironwood Dr #12 Hendersonville, NC 28739 and remember her family in your thoughts & prayers.

Thanks to all of you for what you do for our Hospitalized Veterans.  It doesn't take much to put a smile on the face of our Veterans.  Until next month........

                                                    FEBRUARY 2011

Happy New Year everyone.  I feel sure that as we are "UNITED BY LOVE FOR OUR VETERANS and COUNTRY”, we will still be able to do a lot of good for our Veterans in Hospitals, VA Hospitals and Nursing Homes before this year comes to an end.

Remember Valentine's Day is coming up and the week of February 13 - 19 will be "Salute to Hospitalized Veterans" week.

I hope that all Auxiliaries will be planning some activity or maybe a donation to your local Veterans in the medical facilities.

They will all be very pleased that they have been remembered with parties, games, cards and any other way that you may choose.  They love it all.

The 2011 Golden Age Games will be in Honolulu, HI from May 25 - June 1, 2011.  It is estimated that the cost will be about $1500 -$2000 per person for transportation, food and lodging for the seven (7) day trip.  Sponsorships by way of donations are needed.  If you’re Auxiliary

would like to donate, please contact your respective VAMC Voluntary Services for details.

The National Executive Committee is looking for any recommendations to improve the operation of the VAVS.  If anyone has any suggestions, please send them to me and I will forward them to our National Chairman.

It seems that I keep repeating myself sometimes but ladies we do need to keep working on increasing our number of Regularly Scheduled Volunteers and their hours.  Don't forget about the Youth in your community. They may be glad to volunteer if they are given the information

and opportunity.  They too can earn pins for their hours and the interaction between the Veterans and our Youth can be very good for both.

I would also encourage all Hospital Chairmen, especially for the District that you make sure to share all the information that you have available with the members at your District meetings.  Auxiliary Presidents should also share any information she has with her Hospital Chairman.

Please keep up the good work and remember to send in those reports.  They have not been coming in all that good for the past month.  Let me know if I can help in any way and hope to see all of you at the C of A in February.  "OUR STRENGTH LIES IN UNITY" so let's all

work together for the good of our Hospitalized Veterans.

January 2011

"UNITED BY LOVE FOR OUR VETERANS AND COUNTRY" is a great theme for us all to follow.  With UNITY we have been able to accomplish a lot already this year.  By the time this promotion goes to print, we will have less than four (4) months until those "End of Year Reports" are due on April 15, 2011.  Now that we are on the downhill part of our reporting year, it is time to review your report forms to see if there are activities that your Auxiliary may still need to participate in.

Please remember the Hospitalized Veterans Writing Project.  It is very important for these Veterans to tell their history.  They may also need help with getting it written or typed up and mailed to the Veterans Voices magazine for possible publication.   Also, a reminder that volunteering can be done at Nursing Homes and Community Hospitals as well as the VA Hospital.  All these hours and activities can be reported on your Hospital/VAVS report.

I hope by now that all Auxiliaries who did not have the VAVS and Hospital Guide (pink book) have been able to get one from National.  VAVS Representatives should refer to this handbook to obtain the procedure for getting hourly pins earned by all your Volunteers at the various VA hospitals.  If you need an order form for these pins, please let me know.  Also, all these hours must be verified by your Chief of Voluntary Services before being sent to National.

All Auxiliaries should be giving some thought as to any of their members that may qualify to be nominated for "Hospital Volunteer of the Year".  You will find the application for this award on page YER-11 in your Department Program Book.  It should be completed and mailed to me by April 30, 2011.

The 65th VAVS national Advisory Committee meeting will be held April 27-29, 2011 at the Hyatt Regency in Cincinnati, OH.  All VAVS committee members are encouraged to attend.  This will be an opportunity to learn of Volunteer Programs, innovations in Voluntary Service and to network with national and local members.  All Chief of Voluntary Services should have these forms and I also have them if anyone would like to have them.

Please keep those reports coming and remember the drawing that I promised to have at the C of A for all Auxiliaries who have submitted a report since my last promotion.   Let's make it a real competition to reach our percentage required by National to qualify for their awards next year.

Thank you for all you do for our Hospitalized Veterans.  HAPPY NEW YEAR and hope to see you all at the C of A.

Until next month.....

                                    HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!

Christmas results

I’d like to report on the Christmas gifts given to the hospitalized and Community Living Center (CLC) veterans. They loved them! To those Auxiliaries that donated – 891, 4309, 5202, 5381, 5483, 7034, 7339, 9116, 10349 and 10685, thank you for helping to remember our hospitalized and nursing home veterans at this very special time of year. If you donated and your Auxiliary is not noted here, let me know so I can research what happened to it. We did have one donation that was misapplied. For those Auxiliaries that have yet to donate, PLEASE we fell short on the funds and we need your donations to make up for the balance to cover this year’s gift package. Mail your check to Charles George VAMC, Att: Voluntary Service, 1100 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, NC 28805 and write on the memo line Christmas. Thank you.

                                                               What’s ahead?

Valentine’s Day/Remember Hospitalized Veterans Week

The week of February 14 - Start making cards now. Remember, if each Auxiliary sends 10 cards, there will be enough cards for every veteran in the hospital and CLC. The CLC veterans have requested a Sweetheart Luncheon with their loved one. This (of course) will cost money. If you would like to donate, any amount you can afford, please send a donation to the same address above only this time mark it Sweetheart Luncheon. Don’t forget, the greatest, simplest and most appreciated is a personal visit to say “We care that you cared enough to serve”.

Sponsor Youth Volunteers

This is the best way to get hours for your Auxiliary when you don’t have members who can volunteer on a regular basis. Also, your Auxiliary may be too far away to conduct an activity or assist with one. To sponsor a youth, you send $25 for each youth you’d like to sponsor to the address above and mark it “Youth Volunteer”.

December 2010

Ladies, as I sit down to write this month's promotion, I can hardly believe that the Holidays are upon us.  This is truly a time when we must be "United by Love for our Veterans and Country".  The Holidays can be a lonely time for our Hospitalized Veterans. Some of the Veterans do not have relatives who can visit them or maybe they have no family at all.  This is where a VOLUNTEER can fill the void by making regular visits and being a friend.

A new concept at the VA Medical Centers is called "Concierge Service" and a brochure entitled "Exceeding Veteran Expectations" explains this concept in detail. Check with your Voluntary Services to see about this opportunity for volunteering.

National Hospital/VAVS Chairman Sandra Flynn has furnished me with some statistics that became available to her at the NEC meeting of the VAVS in October.  We had 125 less regularly scheduled volunteers and 1,945 less occasional hours, but we had 1,460 more regularly scheduled hours.  For all organizations, there was an increase in the number of volunteers and hours for the second year in a row.  The Ladies Auxiliary is now credited with serving on VAVS committees in 166 VA facilities which is a decrease. At present time, we are fortunate to have Representatives & Deputies assigned to all the VA facilities in NC so ladies keep up the good work and sign up more volunteers.

Hospital reports are coming but I would like to see a lot more.  So far I only have 20 out of 124 Auxiliaries reporting.  I'm sure all the Auxiliaries are doing work and will do more during the Holidays so let me hear from all of you.  I want to have a lot of reports to review when end of year comes.  From now until C of A in February, all Auxiliaries that send in a report will be put into a pot for a drawing.  I will be giving a prize to one Auxiliary in each membership group.  So, send in those reports and remember only things done for any type of hospital care should be on these forms.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance to any of you and "THANK YOU" for all you do for our Hospitalized Veterans.  It takes very little effort to put a smile on the face of a Veteran.

I wish all of you a Great Thanksgiving and a wonderful Holiday Season.

Until next month.......

Results of Poker Run and Wheelchair Rodeo

The Poker Run was a huge success and the Wheelchair Rodeo outstanding! Everyone had great fun! The Wheelchair Rodeo cost about $2,000 and so if you have any extra money, please donate it to help Voluntary Service recoup the funds that are used for a multitude of recreational activities. Remember to mark your check memo line “Wheelchair Rodeo”. In that way, the funds will go into the proper account (see address below).

Christmas

This is probably the most important event for our hospitalized veterans and nursing home veterans. Just think of how depressing it would be if they were not remembered on this joyous and most holy holiday. We have placed the order for the items for this year’s Christmas package and now is the time to dig deep and send in your donation earmarked for “Christmas”. Remember that gift giving will be held on December 8 at 1PM. I will tell you where to meet in the next mailing since the room is still undetermined. The Multipurpose Room is currently under construction for a new department that will to help process veterans’ claims for service connection faster. (Hooray!)

Mail the checks to: Charles George VAMC, Attn. Voluntary Service, 1100 Tunnel Rd., Asheville, NC 28805.

Third elevator in Atrium, Staircase, and newly renovated Lab

The Atrium will be under construction to add a third elevator. The spot was already allocated when the new addition was built but the money wasn’t available to put it in at that time. There will also be a staircase going down to the lab area. And speaking of the lab, boy is it beautiful! There is a new waiting area (comfy and quiet) as well as “private” phlebotomist rooms to take blood. So, if there are any squeamish veterans, they won’t have an audience to see them wince.

Volunteers still needed

There is still a need for help in the Eye Clinic, Prosthetics stockroom, and 2 clerical needs. The clerical needs require general office skills and knowledge of operating business machines such as scanners and copiers

As we stand "United By Love for our Veterans and Country", we must strive in
every way possible to see that we make a difference in the life of our Hospitalized
Veterans.  We all know that the key to this challenge is the VOLUNTEERS.  As well
as the satisfaction of helping our Veterans, there are awards for Volunters.
          1.  Charm to each member who recruits one or more volunteers
              between 1 July 2010 and 31 May 2011.
          2.  Beginning at 150 hours, a pin or bar to Auxiliary members
for hours earned. These pins can be earned from both the
              VA hospital and from National.
          3.  A pin to each sponsored Non-member volunteer including
Youth who serve at least 100 hours under Auxiliary sponsorship.
The reports have been coming in from several Auxiliaries all over the state.
Some of these reports are on the wrong form so please remember to use the Monthly
Report Form provided in the Department Yearbook.  You may make as many copies of
this form as needed and you may also add extra sheets if needed.  DO NOT include
Community Service on these forms.  That program has a different form and reporting
procedure.  There is also some confusion as to where Hospice is reported.  This
service by the Auxiliaries should be reported on the hospital form. You may also
email reports to me if they are short and signed. If they are lengthy, please send
me a paper report. I only have a small printer at this time that is old and uses
expensive cartridges.  Emails can also get lost, so to be sure I get all reports
I would prefer you mail them to me.

November 1, 2010 is the deadline for the James H Parke Memorial Scholarship
application to reach the President of the Scholarship Fund of the National Advisory
Council.  November is also the month designated for the Annual Joint Review between
the VAVS Representative and the Chief Of Voluntary Services. All reviews should be
forwarded to Sandra Flynn, National Hospital/VAVS Chairman by January 15, 2011.

The Holidays are coming up so check with your Representatives or Voluntary
Services to see what your Auxiliary might be able to do to make the Holidays a
little brighter.  Each hospital should also have a WISH LIST that can be distributed
upon request.  Some will also be available on the display table at C of A.

Ladies, thank you for all you do and keep reporting and volunteering.  Our strength
does lie in UNITY and this will help us to reach our goals that will benefit our Veterans.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2010

"A Veteran whether on active duty, retired or a reservist, is someone who, at one point wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America' for an amount of 'up to and including my life.'  That is HONOR and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it." (Author Unknown) but shared by our National Hospital/VAVS Chairman Sandra Flynn.  Ladies I believe that is our "due" to be "United by Love for our Veterans and Country."  Many of these Veterans that we owe our freedom to are in VA Medical Centers or other facilities where someone else provides their care.

One of the keys to successfully providing for our Hospitalized Veterans is to recruit VOLUNTEERS.  I challenge all VAVS Representatives and Deputies to recruit at least one volunteer by the C of A in October.  Please send me the name & address of any new volunteers so that I can thank them personally for their service.  Also try to get the Youth involved in volunteering. Our Veterans do like to talk to our young people and there is a lot of history to be shared by these Veterans.  When our older Veterans are gone, it would be great to know that the history that they have to tell has been preserved so ask those Youth to take notes.  If any of these Youth are regular volunteers, they may also be eligible to be nominated for the James H Parke Memorial Scholarship.  All VAVS Representatives should mention this to the Chief of Voluntary Services.  Remind them that applications are due by November 1, 2010 and should be sent to John P. Brown, President, James H. Parke Board, 6751 Tanglewood Dr., Boardman, OH 44512-4926. Applications for any Youth volunteer who is nominated for this scholarship should be available at the VAMC where the student volunteers.

A reminder to all Auxiliaries that it is again time to pay your Required Contributions which will include the $20.00 to the Hospital Reserve Fund and your VAVS Hospital contribution. This contribution is based on Auxiliary membership as of 30 June 2010.  You will find the form for this on page F-3 in your Department yearbook.

I know most of you have already started on your Hospital program for this year so get those reports headed my way.  Until next time, keep up the good work and remember "Our Strength Lies in Unity."
