LADIES AUXILIARY to the VFW
DEPARTMENT of NC

Feburary 2011

WHAT I.S CANCER?

This may seem to be an unusual question, but do you really know the meaning? Below is some
information from the American Society of Clinical Oncology
.

Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases characterized by the uncontrolled abnormal growth
of cells
. These cells form a lump or mass called a tumor. Some cancers, however, such as blood cancers
,
do not form tumors. Tumors can be benign(non-cancerous) or malignant that are

(cancerous). Malignant tumors grow and invade other tissues in the body and are usually not life
threatning
.
Malignant tumors grow and invade other tissues in the body and may be life threatning.
Cancer can begin almost anywhere in the body. Tumors are named for the type of cell where the cancer
started

According to statstics cancer is now the leading cause of death, not heart disease.

The overall survival rate for all types of cancer is about 65%. The stats are rising, but this is not what we want to hear. We are working for a time when there will be no more stats. Cancer will be no more. As we all know the only way for this to happen is to continuue raising money to fight for new cures.

Research is our only hope for wiping out this dreadful disease.

I am asking each Auiliary to come up with some ideas for raising this money. Please share your ideas with other Auxiliaries as every penny is so important in finding a cure for cancer.

EARLY DETECTION AND SCREENING:

Cancer treatment is more likely to be successful when it is diagnosed early. I am asking each of you to have your check-ups and screenings done on a regular basis.

Please remember how important it is to get the $2.00 per member in as soon as possible. Time is running out for this year.

We have a lot of Cancer pins and we do need to sell them .. If you have any pin money send it to Jeanne our department treasurer. This is another important part of our cancer program.

Keep up the great work you are doing for Cancer Aid and Research.

Dillie Staton
Chairman
