Feburary 2011

WHAT I.S CANCER?

This may seem to be an unusual question, but do you really know the meaning? Below is some
information from the American Society of Clinical Oncology
.

Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases characterized by the uncontrolled abnormal growth
of cells
. These cells form a lump or mass called a tumor. Some cancers, however, such as blood cancers
,
do not form tumors. Tumors can be benign(non-cancerous) or malignant that are

(cancerous). Malignant tumors grow and invade other tissues in the body and are usually not life
threatning
.
Malignant tumors grow and invade other tissues in the body and may be life threatning.
Cancer can begin almost anywhere in the body. Tumors are named for the type of cell where the cancer
started

According to statstics cancer is now the leading cause of death, not heart disease.

The overall survival rate for all types of cancer is about 65%. The stats are rising, but this is not what we want to hear. We are working for a time when there will be no more stats. Cancer will be no more. As we all know the only way for this to happen is to continuue raising money to fight for new cures.

Research is our only hope for wiping out this dreadful disease.

I am asking each Auiliary to come up with some ideas for raising this money. Please share your ideas with other Auxiliaries as every penny is so important in finding a cure for cancer.

EARLY DETECTION AND SCREENING:

Cancer treatment is more likely to be successful when it is diagnosed early. I am asking each of you to have your check-ups and screenings done on a regular basis.

Please remember how important it is to get the $2.00 per member in as soon as possible. Time is running out for this year.

We have a lot of Cancer pins and we do need to sell them .. If you have any pin money send it to Jeanne our department treasurer. This is another important part of our cancer program.

Keep up the great work you are doing for Cancer Aid and Research.

CANCER AID AND RESEARCH

JANUARY, 2011

Ladies:

As all our holidays are coming to an end it really is time for us to get busy with our Cancer program.  Be sure you have checked to see if you have completed everything that your yearend report requires.  If you have not, please do so as soon as possible.  All of you know this is the way awards are won.  BY YOUR HARD WORK!!!!!!!!!!

 CHILDHOOD LEUKEMIAS:

This is a topic we all dislike to hear about, but it is very real.  There is a growing concern about children with cancer.  Precise diagnosis and classification are essential to the successful treatment and biologic study of the childhood leukemia.  The leukemias are classified as acute versus chronic and as lymphoid versus myeloid.  The vast majority of childhood leukemia cases are acute, unlike those in adults.  The most common subtype, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, know as ALL, accounts for 75 to 80% of all childhood cases, with acute myeloid comprising approximately 20% and chronic myeloid leukemia comprising approximately 2%.

Careful examination of bone marrow is essential to establishing the diagnosis of leukemia because as many as 20% of patients with acute leukemia lack circulating blast cells at the time of diagnosis, and the morphology of leukemia cells in peripheral blood may differ from that in the marrow.  Treatment of individual cases should be based on primary disease process.

Every parent and grandparent should be aware of all the childhood cancers.  Again, as in every type of cancer, early detection is the first step.

Let’s all do our part and more for Cancer Aid and Research and maybe one day it will be eradicated.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  Will this be the year we find cures?

DEPARTMENT OF NORTH CAROLINA

CANCER AID AND RESEARCH

NOVEMBER, 2010

I know that you were not expecting see me doing CANCER AID AND RESEARCH again.  I will be your Department Chairman for the remainder of this year.

First, I want to thank each of you that brought items for the table and thanks to all of you that purchased items from the table.  This is a very important part of our program as it is one of the ways we can make extra money for Cancer Aid and Research.

I hope all of you are working on your programs.  Be sure to look at the year-end report from so that you will know what is expected of you this year.

If you have any cancer pins, please sell them as this is also part of our program.  If you do not have any, contact me anytime and I will get them to you.  They are still $2.00 each and to date we still have a lot left.  Sisters, Janice and I need your help with this.

If you have not had a special program to promote cancer this year, please do so as our year is almost half over.  There is any number of things that you can do.  Pass out pamphlets about different types of cancer and their treatments.  You can ask a Doctor or Nurse that has knowledge of cancer to come to your meeting and speak to your members.  Some Auxiliaries have a Bingo game and all the proceeds are donated to Cancer Aid and Research.  You will be surprised at the number of people that will help.  All you need to do is ask.

I hope all of you have sent in your $2.00 per member as this in one our obligations.  The grant money that is paid to our sisters that are stricken with cancer comes from this money.

Remember to bring items for the cancer table to the next C of A meeting.
